One Story about Beauty

I was provoked to write this post because of the statement of our current Miss Bulgaria 2009 that “Beauty will not save the world” on our Miss Bulgaria Contest 2009. Of course, it lies as a note on my desk again but today I got up early (it is 8:27 AM) and I have time and inspiration to write about it.

I was annoyed of her statement and of her ignorance and lack of understanding. The real statement is “Beauty will save the world”. This statement is truly Bulgarian and it comes from Yordan Yovkov, one of the best Bulgarian short story writers, who wrote mainly of the Bulgarian customs and of the psychology of Bulgarian people, but his stories can be seen as universal, fitting to every man. He presented high psychological suggestion and lyricism in his works and they are unordinary, caring mysticism of the past, giving us everlasting truths. His short stories are really short but he with a bit of words says everything and even more. His stories are so genius that I must recognize him as writer of world level, but for a pity he had the bad chance to be born Bulgarian.

Now let’s return to the statement. It is from Yordan Yovkov`s short story “Albena”, a very good written, planned and designed story. I won’t retell it now. Everyone can read it alone and make his conclusions. But the great writer, who Yovkov uncompromisingly is, has seen and presented the general truth very clearly and in a way that make us muse on. One great contradiction and one unforgettable story. He is a giant for me as are and variety of other Bulgarian writers, who were artists of world class and who we Bulgarians don’t respect. And more, most Bulgarians are not acquainted with their artwork and don’t appreciate it. Even more it is seen a tendency, here in Bulgaria, that literature and poetry are ridiculous and senseless. The other tendency is to adore foreign artists who are for sure great and to forget our own literature heritage in order to copy and not to be us.

Everyone forgives to the sinner Albena, because she is beautiful. And if Beauty was not at our world, the world would be other. Before Beauty man is softened, charmed, enchanted, venerated and good. The Beauty touches every tone of man’s heart, soul and mind and he is better, he is more loving, he is inclined to forgive, to forget the bad. Beauty is the magic of the world. The weapon. The sense. Before it a variety of artists, leaders, kings and ordinary men have been on their knees. There were wars about it and still are. The examples are many (the most known Trojan War, duels in the Middle Ages for beautiful ladies and etc.) A lot of writers have written about Beauty and glorified it. Without Beauty our life would be different. I recommend that everyone think about life without Beauty and to say in his heart if it makes him a better man. This is the great Yovkov.

Now,
what will I do in 9:49 AM?

I will make another coffee and find my old book with collection of Yovkov short stories and reread it…and maybe it will provoke me to think again. I recommend you to do so, because life is in the moments when we are enlightened and aware. Life is when we love and not when we hate and dislike.

Life is one story about Beauty.

FAIR WIND!
